WHY YOU SHOULD THINK OF THAT MENIAL JOB
Some days back, I was sitting in the midst of some two married men who are my neighbours. They talked about a lot of things.
One of them was a banker who worked for Access bank in town. The other man is a teacher, who teaches in a private school in Bukuru, here in Jos.
The both men talked about how the Pandemic was eating deep into their finance. The banker as we still call him, told the teacher that he broke down in tears when he saw his name among the workers who were dropped. He said his branch in town was closed because of the inability to pay up staffs.
He told the teacher how he had just bought two plot of land with his savings, worth 1million naira, and how he was hoping to recover and get back on his feet, after receiving three or four months salary. He complained bitterly how the corona Virus pandemic came and spoilt everything, living him without a Job and money.
He complained about being totally broke and penniless. He told us he found it difficult providing food for his wife and children.
"As it is now, I don't have money on me. And my wife is not doing anything at the moment. I have tried contacting friends, but no one seems to have at the moment. I am just calculating how I will raise money to buy food for my kids." He said.
"Ah ah. That one is not a problem na. You can still sell off a plot of land, or even half plot to start something else doing. You can start selling provision depending on when you get a Job." The teacher advised.
"Haba no na. God forbid bad thing. I bought that land at a very cheap rate o. The location where I bought that land, if I am to sell it now, I will get at least 1.5million. Na just luck make me see that land. That was why I had to use all I had to acquire it. I can't sell it now. I want to build on it." The banker replied firmly.
The banker asked the teacher how he had managed to survive with his family, considering the fact that schools had now been closed, and nothing seems to be working.
The teacher smiled. He told us how he had used his Okada to feed his family. He said his own story was a big testimony.
"When they closed schools, I thought it was going to be for a month. That was what the school told us. They paid us half salary and told us that when school resumes fully, we would be paid the rest. But when I realised it was more than a month, and there was no fixed date for school resumption, I had to start Okada business. It has really been paying off. If not for my Okada, I wonder how I would have survived. That is how I have been managing to put food on the table o." The teacher testified.
The banker nodded his head, and commended him for making use of the available alternative he had.
"You can also do it o. That is another way to survive. You have a car that has been lying idle in the garage for days now. Why don't you start picking and dropping off passengers. You can start from Anguldi to Jos." The teacher advised.
"You mean kabu kabu?"
"Yes. Those people make money o. I wish I had a car, my standard of living would have been much more better. If your situation is this bad as you say, you should start up kabu kabu. It will really help cover you some shame, and stop you from going out to beg and also asking friends for assistance."
"God forbid bad thing. This one is backwardness na. It is backwardness. How can a banker like me, with my certificate and all, start driving commercial taxi and picking up passengers with my car. That one is the biggest shame seff."
The teacher laughed off the matter, and the conversation was changed to another.
Then it struck me. Pride they say goes before a fall. Many of us have the available resources to earn money and survive, but we feel we are too big to do such jobs. We prefer to beg in secrete than to come out and hustle in public. Most of us are to be blamed for our own sufferings and Joblessness.
Until you drop your pride aside, and look inside of you, and also around you, you will never know how much potential you have. You will never know what you can actually offer, and what you stand to gain from that menial Job you feel is nothing.
Have a blessed day.
